McPherson’s style is built on recognizable urban motifs—St. Louis Cathedral, surrounding French Quarter buildings, riverfront atmosphere, balconies, and streets—but he treats them less as documentary subjects than as compositional engines. His own writing emphasizes expressive brushstrokes, dark lines, soft grays, rich yellows, ochres, deep reds, and at times complementary color contrasts such as oranges and blues or magentas and yellows. That palette, combined with a willingness to simplify forms and let areas of the canvas become more abstract, places his work in conversation with abstract expressionism, surrealism, color field painting, and fauvist intensity.
